It is with great pleasure that we share with you that Harry Frampton, Chair of East West Partners, has announced East West is moving its minimum wage to $15 per hour for straight hourly positions. There has been a national conversation on this subject recently, with some states proposing to raise their minimums over a several year period. This has inspired us to reach out beyond a planned CPI (Consumer Price Index) increase and move our starting wage to $15 per hour ahead of the standard timeline. This new minimum will be phased in over the next 12 months. The increase will apply to over 300 hourly employees in our mountain affiliates, where affected employees received an increase, effective 8/6/16, for 50% of the amount necessary to ultimately bring them to $15.00 per hour. On 8/1/17, the same employees will receive the remainder of their increase to bring them to the new East West minimum wage.
East West employees already experience a high cost of living in the Vail Valley, as well as in Lake Tahoe, California. Our businesses are labor intensive and we want all of our team members to be able to thrive, not just survive. We foresee additional benefits, such as further reducing turnover and enabling our people to enjoy the work-life balance that is at the core of our culture. East West’s average minimum wage is already over $12 per hour, well in excess of Colorado’s minimum of $8.31 and California’s minimum of $10 per hour. However, this additional increase is prudent in that it helps sustain our position as one of Vail Valley’s and Lake Tahoe’s best places to work.
East West is extremely proud to include all companies in our mountain affiliates: Slifer, Smith, and Frampton Real Estate, Eye Pieces of Vail, Allegria Spa, Edwards Station, and operating affiliate East West Destination Hospitality (EWDH, formerly East West Resorts). The EWDH umbrella includes The Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa, Beaver Creek Mountain Lodging, Vail Mountain Lodging, Tahoe Mountain Lodging and Luxury Home Rentals by East West.
We view this as a “win-win,” for our team members, the clients and the guests that we serve, all while contributing to our various firms’ mission to enhance our communities and sustain a rich and positive culture. Happier employees are in a better position to continue our 30 year history of being the “employer of choice”.
